Luxury Chess and Backgammon Table with Carved Scrollwork
Scrollwork runs right around the chess board and down the legs, cut in relief so the pattern lifts off the surface instead of sitting flat on it. Closed, this is a chess table, and a handsome one. Lift the hinged top and it opens into a full backgammon table, the playing field inlaid in light and dark wood underneath.
The top here is a full square, 23.6 x 23.6" / 60 x 60 cm, which is a good deal more room than the folding tables give you — elbows on the table, the dice cup within reach, nobody's knees in the way. It is a wooden chess table you can leave standing in a room and be glad of, and a backgammon table the moment somebody asks for one.

Carving the Scrollwork
Scrollwork looks easy from a distance and is nothing of the sort. The curve has to hold its width the whole way round, and a hand that hesitates leaves a flat spot the eye finds immediately. Running it around an entire board and then down four legs is a long, patient job — and it is most of what you are actually seeing when this table catches your eye from across a room.
