The whole top of this chess set with storage lifts up on hinges to reveal one felt-lined compartment for all 32 wooden pieces — no drawers, no pulls, no seams. The board is 40 × 40 × 10 cm / 15.7″ × 15.7″ × 3.9″, handmade in Armenia from beech and walnut in a warm honey tone.
This is the wooden chess set that hides its storage completely. The frame is scalloped along every edge, leafy scrolls fill the corners, a shell-and-scroll ornament sits at the centre of the apron over a lattice band, and the whole box stands on short shaped feet. The squares are inlaid in two woods and the coordinates are marked beside them.
Lift the board and drop the pieces — carved in light and dark wood — into the felt; close it and it is a carved box on a shelf again. If a knight has ever gone missing in your house, this is the cure: the pieces have exactly one place to be.
