Marbled turquoise epoxy fills the dark squares of this luxury octagonal chess set with storage, on a pale field inside a wide frame carved with acanthus scrolls, with a felt-lined drawer beneath for the 32 wooden pieces. The board is 50 × 50 cm / 19.6″ × 19.6″ across the points, handmade in Armenia from beech.

This is the wooden chess set that mixes old carving with new colour. The eight-sided frame gives four corners, and each one carries a cartouche of acanthus leaves round a lattice panel, cut in relief over a dotted ground; a rope-and-bead line follows the rim, the coordinates sit on brass roundels, and the sides are textured down to the feet. The blue moves like water as the light changes.

A felt-lined drawer slides out on a brass pull and takes every piece — turned in light and dark wood, 16 a side — so the board is tidy the moment the game ends and never needs a bag. Heavy enough to stay where it is put, and meant to be played on there.
