Travel Chess Set with Leaf Scroll Frame — Handmade in Armenia
Leaf scrolls are carved in relief round the whole frame of this travel chess set, on a wavy-edged board that folds shut on bronze clasps. It is 40 × 40 cm / 15.7″ × 15.7″, handmade in Armenia from beech and stained walnut brown, with 32 wooden chess pieces and a black carrying bag.
This is the wooden chess set for the player who likes something to look at while the other side thinks. Big acanthus leaves curl along every side and turn into scrolls at the corners, all standing off a dotted ground, and the edge of the board is shaped to follow them. The coordinates are carved into the flat band beside the squares.
The 32 pieces are turned in light and dark wood, with the knights carved as horse heads, and they ride inside the closed board. Light enough to carry in the bag to a friend's flat, handsome enough to stay out on the table afterwards.
