A band of carved knotwork runs round the chessboard of this folding chess set, interlaced diamonds on a dotted ground inside a stippled outer edge. It comes in three sizes — 30, 40 or 50 cm square (11.8″, 15.7″ or 19.6″) — handmade in Armenia from beech, with 32 wooden chess pieces and a black carrying bag.

This is the wooden chess set that suits a desk, a kitchen table or a shelf, depending on the size you pick. The knotwork stands up in relief with dots punched into the ground between the loops, the coordinates are cut beside the two-tone squares, and the frame is stained a deep walnut brown. It folds in half on bronze hinges and closes with two clasps.

Inside, both halves are lined in black felt, and the 32 turned pieces — light and dark — ride there when the board is shut. The 30 cm board goes in a rucksack; the 50 cm one is a full-size board for long evenings. Choose the size above.
