Cut to a scalloped outline like a cartouche, this travel chess set is a dark-stained 30 × 30 cm / 11.8″ × 11.8″ board with a stippled frame, the chessboard across its outer faces and two black felt-lined trays inside that hold all 32 turned pieces. Handmade in Armenia, with a bag.

The edge of this wooden chess set curves in and out all the way round — a broad lobe at each corner, a notch at the middle of each side — and the frame between edge and field is stippled by hand, so the thumb finds the shape before the eye does. The squares are inlaid pale and brown wood with the coordinates cut into the border.

Folded, it is a slim scalloped case with a brass clasp at the front; open the other way, the two felt trays take the pieces, turned in pale and dark-stained wood and sized to the small squares. No second game inside — the interior is for the army.
