ARMENIA is lettered along the top and bottom of this Armenian chess set, with Mount Ararat between the letters and grape clusters in the corners. The board is 30 × 30 cm / 11.8″ × 11.8″, handmade in Armenia from beech and stained walnut brown, with 32 wooden chess pieces and a carrying bag.

This is the wooden chess set that says where it is from. The word runs in open capitals along each end of the board, the twin peaks float in pale wood above it, and a scroll ornament curls into every corner with a bunch of grapes hanging from it. The frame is flat and square-edged, and the coordinates are carved beside the squares.

Fold it shut on the bronze clasps and the pieces ride inside. Open it the other way and the inside is carved as a backgammon field, with the map of Armenia in line work in each half. The 32 chess pieces are turned in light and dark wood; checkers and dice are not included, so bring your own for the second game.

Is the carving real? Yes. The letters, the peaks, the grapes and the scrolls are cut into the beech and left pale against the stain, and the map and the points inside are drawn in fine line work. Nothing is printed.

Are backgammon checkers included? No. This set comes with the 32 chess pieces. The inside of the board is carved as a backgammon field, so you can add your own checkers and dice if you want the second game.
