Crowned kings, a horseman, an archer and heavy bunches of grapes are carved round the frame of this luxury Armenian chess set, with a fortress cartouche lettered in Armenian at each end and the map of Armenia inside. 60 × 60 cm / 23.6″ × 23.6″ open, handmade in Armenia from beech, with 32 figural carved pieces and a bag.

This is the wooden chess set that tells a story on every side. The figures are cut in deep relief on a stippled ground — a king in profile under his crown, a rider at full gallop, an archer drawing his bow, vine leaves and grapes between them — and the coordinates are carved beside the inlaid squares. The 32 pieces are carved as figures too: bearded kings, helmeted pawns, horse-head knights, one army pale and the other dark.

Open it and the inside is carved as a backgammon field, with the Republic of Armenia and its provinces inlaid in one half and a second, larger map lettered "Armenia from sea to sea" in the other. The set ships with the chess pieces only; add checkers and dice for the second game.

Is the carving real? Yes. Every figure on the frame — the kings, the rider, the archer, the grapes — is cut into the beech in relief with the ground stippled by hand; the lettering is carved, the maps inside are inlaid pale wood, and the pieces are carved from wood. Nothing is printed or moulded.

Are backgammon checkers included? No — the set comes with the 32 chess pieces. The inside is a carved backgammon field with the maps; add your own checkers and dice for a second game.
