Luxury Russian Chess Backgammon Set with Double-Headed Eagle
Closed, it is a chess board — and a big one, a full 23.6" / 60 cm across in walnut, carved end to end in a tight lattice with the double-headed eagle inlaid at its centre. The pieces that stand on it are faceted rather than turned, cut into flat planes so they catch light down their edges. It is a wooden chess set with a definite character: geometric, heraldic, nothing soft about it.
Then it opens. Inside is a full backgammon field with its checkers and dice, so one object covers both games your family actually plays. At this size it is a chess backgammon set that holds a room rather than a corner of a table — and it still folds in half and lifts by its own handle when the evening is over.
