Marbled brown epoxy — amber where the light catches it, near-black where it does not — fills the dark squares of this travel chess and backgammon set, inside a carved band of lilies on pale beech. 30 × 30 cm / 11.8″ × 11.8″ open, handmade in Armenia, with 32 figural chess pieces, 32 checkers, dice and a bag.

This is the wooden chess set with an army of faces. The 32 pieces are figures, not turned shapes — crowned kings, helmeted knights, tower rooks, hooded pawns — one side near-black and glossy, the other cream, each on a round base. The squares under them are poured one at a time, so the marbling differs in every one, and the coordinates sit in brass discs beside the field.

Round the field runs a band of carved fleur-de-lis on a stippled ground, with a scroll in each corner. Open the clasp and the backgammon field is inside — line-work points, a sun wheel in each half, a trough along each side for the wooden checkers, and a pair of dice.

Good to Know Before You Buy

Is the brown epoxy painted on? No. Each dark square is resin poured into the beech and polished level, which is why it reads amber in the light and near-black in shadow. The lily band, the corner scrolls and the points inside are cut into the wood; the coordinates are brass discs. Nothing is printed.
