One drawer for each colour: this compact chess set with storage has a felt-lined drawer on opposite sides, each on a brass ring, under a border carved in diamond lattice round an inlaid field. It is 40 × 40 × 10 cm / 15.7″ × 15.7″ × 3.9″, handmade in Armenia from beech and stained a warm red-brown.

This is the desk-sized wooden chess set. The lattice covers the top border from the field to the edge, the sides carry lattice panels either side of each drawer, and the coordinates are carved pale beside the squares. It stands on four shaped block feet, so it sits up off the desk rather than flat on it.

Light pieces in one drawer, dark in the other — 32 turned pieces in all — and setting up stops being a rummage: each player pulls their own drawer and the army is already sorted. Small enough for a student room or an office, with the full amount of carving of a larger board.

Which sides are the drawers on? Opposite sides, so one faces each player. Both are lined with black felt and open on a brass ring, and each takes 16 pieces lying flat. The board does not need to be moved or lifted to reach them.
