A square chessboard of marbled turquoise epoxy sits inside a dark carved circle on this luxury round chess set with storage, with a felt-lined drawer beneath for the 32 wooden pieces. The board is 50 cm / 19.6″ across and 11 cm / 4.3″ high, handmade in Armenia from beech.

This is the wooden chess set that is not square. The pale field with its blue squares sits square inside a round frame, and the four segments left over are filled with acanthus leaves carved in relief on a dotted ground. A rope-and-bead line follows the rim, the coordinates sit on brass roundels beside the squares, and the sides are textured all the way round to the feet.

Underneath, a drawer lined in dark felt slides out on a brass pull and takes every piece — 16 light, 16 dark, all turned in wood — so the board lives on a table without a box beside it. At 11 cm / 4.3″ high it sits low, which suits a coffee table as well as a desk.
