This is the wooden chess set for a desk, a student room or a small flat. The sides curve inward like a cushion, a scroll is carved into each corner over a dotted ground, the drawer fronts are cut in a fine lattice, and the whole thing stands on four shaped feet. The squares are inlaid in two woods.

Pull any drawer and there is a lined compartment for the pieces — light and dark wood, carved rather than plain-turned — so the set goes away in one movement and the board stays out on the shelf. No bag, no box, no missing pawn. The chess set with drawers for people without a games cupboard.
