Emerald-green epoxy sits in the dark squares of this luxury octagonal chess set with storage, against a pale field and a dark-stained frame carved with acanthus corners, with a felt-lined drawer underneath for all 32 wooden pieces. It measures 50 × 50 cm / 19.6″ × 19.6″ point to point and is handmade in Armenia from beech.

Green is the colour that sits best next to old wood, and here the whole frame is stained a deep brown to meet it. Each of the four corners carries acanthus leaves cut in relief round a diamond-lattice panel, the ground between them is dotted, a rope-and-bead line runs along the rim, and the coordinates are set on small brass roundels. The sides are textured to the feet.

The drawer slides out on a brass pull, lined in dark felt, and holds the full set of turned pieces — 16 light, 16 dark — so the board stays out on the table with nothing beside it. It is a heavy, settled piece; put it where the games happen and leave it there.
