Thirty-two openwork bronze pieces stand on polished marble bases — pale stone for one army, dark for the other — on this luxury walnut chess set, a solid slab with marbled green epoxy squares, a carved lattice band and a cast brass foot at each corner. 50 × 50 cm / 19.6″ × 19.6″, handmade in Armenia, with a bag.

This is the wooden chess set built from four materials, each doing one thing. The walnut is left its own pale colour with the grain running through the field; the green is poured square by square and polished level, so every pour swirls differently; a diamond lattice is cut round the squares inside a beaded moulding; and the coordinates sit on brass discs. The board does not fold — it is meant to stay out.

The pieces are the reason for the price. Each is cast in pierced bronze — crowns, horse heads, tower tops, filigree bodies — and fixed to a turned disc of real marble, so a piece has stone heft at the bottom and metal at the top and settles onto the resin with a click. The four feet are cast brass in a scrolled pattern, lifting the slab off the table.
