Turquoise epoxy fills the dark squares of this travel chess and backgammon set, with Mount Ararat carved beside the cut-out handle and a knotwork border round the field. The board is 30 × 30 cm / 11.8″ × 11.8″, handmade in Armenia from beech, with 32 wooden chess pieces, 32 checkers, a dice set and a carrying bag.

This is the wooden chess set for someone who wants colour on the table. The resin squares are poured into the wood and sanded flush, so the surface plays as one flat board, and the blue shifts with the light like water. Around them the border is cut as a knotwork band, the peaks of Ararat rise in low relief under the handle, and the coordinates are carved beside the squares.

Open the bronze clasps and the backgammon board inside is carved in line work, with a wheel ornament at the heart of each half and a second pair of handle slots on the edges. The chess pieces come in light and dark wood, the checkers and dice with them. A set for the flat by the sea, or the friend who already has everything in walnut brown.
