This is the wooden chess set that gives a coloured board a proper army. Each turquoise square is its own pour, swirling between sea-blue and green and polished level with the wood; the frame carries a stippled band beside each handle, brass discs for the coordinates and an edge that waves in scallops. The pieces have ribbed and leaf-cut bodies, crowned kings and queens and knights with a full mane, pale wood for one side and dark for the other.

Shut, the two handles meet and a full-size board lifts in one hand; open it the other way and both halves are lined in black felt for the pieces. There is no second game inside — it closes on bronze hinges and clasps, and the bag takes the lot.
