Swirls of blue epoxy sit in the dark squares of this walnut chess set, poured flush into a single slab of figured wood with a carved lattice band round the field and a cast brass foot at each corner. 40 × 40 cm / 15.7″ × 15.7″, handmade in Armenia, with 32 turned wooden pieces and a carrying bag.

This is the wooden chess set that does not fold — a solid slab with the pieces on top and nothing to unclip. Each blue square is its own pour, so the swirl runs differently in every one, and the walnut between them keeps its grain straight through the field. A fine diamond lattice is cut round the squares, a scalloped moulding runs round the edge, and the coordinates sit in round brass discs.

The four feet are cast brass in a scrolled pattern, lifting the board a little off the table. The 32 pieces are turned in two woods, pale for one side and dark for the other, with carved horse-head knights, and the whole set goes in its bag between games.
