Nothing on this classic travel chess and backgammon set but a stippled border round the chessboard and a backgammon field inside — the simplest board we sell. It is 30 × 30 cm / 11.8″ × 11.8″ open, handmade in Armenia from beech, with 32 wooden chess pieces, 32 checkers, a dice set and a carrying bag.

This is the wooden chess set that fits in a coat pocket. The frame is worked in a fine dotted texture that catches the light like sandpaper grain, with the coordinates set inside it beside the squares; the squares themselves are pale and dark stained wood, the corners square, the edge plain. Folded it is 15 × 30 cm, the size of a paperback.

Undo the bronze clasp and the inside is a backgammon board with the points drawn in line work, half in each leaf, and a small hollow at the top of each point for the checkers. Chess pieces, checkers and dice go in the bag. A first board for a child, or the one that lives in the glovebox.

How small are the pieces? Small — the squares are a little under 3 cm, so the pieces are sized to match, a few centimetres tall, turned in light and dark wood. They store in the bag with the checkers and dice rather than inside the board, so nothing rattles when it is closed.
