A waved edge and a stippled band at each end are the only decoration on this travel chess and backgammon set — a dark-stained 30 × 30 cm / 11.8″ × 11.8″ board with the chessboard across its outer faces and a line-work backgammon field inside, handmade in Armenia, with 32 turned pieces, checkers, dice and a bag.

This is the wooden chess set that fits a coat pocket in a kitchen drawer: folded, it is a slim case with a brass clasp at the front; open, the inlaid pale and brown squares run edge to edge inside a thin border with the coordinates cut in, and the punched bands at either end give the hand something to hold.

Open it the other way for the second game — points cut in line work with a dot at each tip, troughs along the ends for the checkers, no ornament to distract from the dice. The pieces are turned in pale and dark-stained wood, sized to the small squares, and everything goes back inside the board and into the bag.
