A carry handle is cut into each end of this travel chess and backgammon set, with Mount Ararat carved in a small arch beneath it — chess outside, backgammon inside. The board is 30 × 30 cm / 11.8″ × 11.8″, handmade in Armenia from beech, with 32 wooden chess pieces, 32 checkers, a dice set and a carrying bag.

This is the wooden chess set that gets picked up by the handle on the way out of the door. Leaf scrolls run in line work along the top and bottom edges, with fans of dotted texture between the leaves, and the peaks of Ararat sit in relief in a little arch at the centre of each end. The rest of the frame is left plain, so the board stays light in the hand.

Open it on the bronze clasps and the backgammon board inside has its points cut in line work, with a second pair of handle slots on the edges. Chess pieces, checkers and dice all pack inside and go in the bag. A set for the picnic table, the train and the summer house.
