Bunches of grapes, vine leaves and tendrils are carved deep round the whole frame of this Armenian chess set, in pale unstained beech, with marbled green epoxy in the dark squares and a carry handle cut through each end. 50 × 50 cm / 19.6″ × 19.6″ open, handmade in Armenia, with 32 turned pieces and a bag.

This is the wooden chess set that pairs the vineyard with the colour of its leaves. The grapes hang in full round clusters at the corners and along the sides, with veined leaves and winding tendrils between them, all standing off a hand-punched ground out to an edge that waves in scallops. The green squares are separate marbled pours polished level with the pale wood; the coordinates sit on brass discs, and the pieces are turned in pale wood and dark.

Under the lid is the surprise: the inside is cut as a backgammon field in line work with the map of Armenia drawn in each half, its provinces named in Armenian script. The set ships with the chess pieces only. Closed on its bronze hinges and clasps, the two handles meet and the board lifts in one hand.

Is the carving real? Yes. The grapes, leaves and tendrils are carved into the beech in relief with the ground punched by hand, the handles are cut through the frame, the green is resin poured into each square and polished flush, the coordinates are brass discs, and the map and points inside are cut in line work. Nothing is printed.

Are backgammon checkers included? No. This set ships with the 32 chess pieces; the inside is cut as a backgammon field, so a set of checkers and dice of your own turns it into a two-game board.
