Eagle and lion either side of the shield — the coat of arms of Armenia — are carved in a round panel at each end of this Armenian chess and backgammon set, on a frame cut with a diamond lattice. 50 × 50 cm / 19.6″ × 19.6″ open, handmade in Armenia from beech, chess outside and backgammon inside.

This is the wooden chess set that flies the flag. The lattice runs right round the frame, the two round panels with the arms sit at the top and bottom edge, and the sides are cut in a wave with the corners drawn out. The squares are inlaid pale and dark with the coordinates carved along every side, and the pieces are turned in the same two tones, the dark side stained and lacquered, the knights with cut horse heads.

Open it on the bronze hinges and the backgammon field is inside: pale points inlaid into the dark ground and a carved sun wheel ringed with scrollwork in each half. Two games for one Armenian household, or for the family abroad that wants the arms on the table.
