This is the wooden chess set for the family that still argues about spelling. The letters tumble around the squares at different angles, each one standing pale against the dark stain, so the border reads like a page from a first-grade primer. The edge is cut in soft scallops, the coordinates are carved beside the field, and the handle is part of the board itself.

Inside, the board is lined with black velvet, one compartment on each side for the pieces. The 32 chess pieces are turned in light and dark wood.
