Hand-Carved Grapevine Wooden Chess Set

Hand-Carved Grapevine Wooden Chess Set — Handmade in Armenia

Handmade in Armenia from beech wood, this folding chess set has grape clusters and vine leaves carved in deep relief around the board. Bronze clasps hold it closed for travel. Choose from three sizes, 11.8, 15.7 or 19.7 in square (30, 40 or 50 cm). Each set includes 32 carved wooden chess pieces and a black carrying bag.

This is the wooden chess set for a wine table. The border is a dense vine — bunches of grapes, broad leaves and twisting stems — cut deep enough that the varnish pools in the hollows and every cluster catches the light, with a row of small notches along the outer edge. The squares are left plain and pale, and the coordinates are carved beside them.

The light and dark wooden pieces are carved as well as turned: the kings and queens wear open crowns, and the knights have flowing manes. Choose the compact board for travel, the medium board for a small table or the largest board for a more spacious game.

Why You'll Love It

• Grapes in relief: the vine is carved deep, so the border reads from across the room and rewards a close look.
• Carved pieces: crowns on the kings and queens, manes on the knights — not a plain turned set.
• Three sizes: the same vine and the same pieces on a travel board, a table board or a full-size one.

Good to Know Before You Buy

Is the carving real? Yes. The grapes, leaves and stems are carved into the wood in deep relief and varnished, the notches on the edge are cut by hand, and each piece is carved and turned. Nothing is printed.
