Grape clusters and vine leaves are carved in deep relief round the chessboard of this grapevine chess set, which folds shut on bronze clasps. It comes in three sizes — 30, 40 or 50 cm square (11.8″, 15.7″ or 19.6″) — handmade in Armenia from beech, with 32 carved wooden chess pieces and a black carrying bag.

This is the wooden chess set for a wine table. The border is a dense vine — bunches of grapes, broad leaves and twisting stems — cut deep enough that the varnish pools in the hollows and every cluster catches the light, with a row of small notches along the outer edge. The squares are left plain and pale, and the coordinates are carved beside them.

The pieces are carved as well as turned: the kings and queens wear open crowns, the knights have flowing manes, and the whole set comes in light and dark wood. Pick the small board for travelling, the middle one for the flat, the full-size one for the dining table.
