A band of scrolled knotwork is carved in deep relief round the chessboard of this folding chess set, which closes on bronze clasps over a black felt interior. It comes in three sizes — 30, 40 or 50 cm square (11.8″, 15.7″ or 19.6″) — handmade in Armenia from beech, with 32 carved wooden pieces and a black carrying bag.

This is the wooden chess set for the traditionalist. The scrolls loop into one another in an unbroken chain round the whole frame, cut so deep the border reads almost as lace, and the dark stain in the hollows makes every curve stand out. The squares are plain and pale, the coordinates carved beside them.

The pieces are carved in light and dark wood with felt under every base, and they ride inside on black felt when the board is closed. Three boards to choose from: small for the bag, middle for the flat, full-size for the table that hosts.
