A carved scroll border frames the inlaid chessboard on this luxury chess and backgammon table, with a plain panel either side of it and scrollwork again on the apron and leg knees; unfolded, the field inside is drawn in the wood — points with scalloped, rounded bases, a whirling sun in each half, arched bands at the ends. 60 × 60 cm / 23.6″ × 23.6″ open, 70 cm / 27.6″ high, handmade in Armenia.

This is the quieter wooden chess and backgammon table: no metal, no crests, the figure of the beech left showing under a warm brown finish, the chessboard inlaid in pale and brown squares, a felt-lined compartment under the swinging top, and round recesses in the corners of the field for the dice cup. The cabriole legs carry a carved leaf at each knee.

Both armies are turned wood — sixteen pale and sixteen dark chess pieces — and the backgammon checkers, dice cup and dice are wooden too; when the table needs to move, the four cabriole legs unbolt from the frame.

Good to Know Before You Buy

How does the table open? The top is hinged: swing it aside for the felt-lined compartment or unfold it flat across the frame for backgammon. The scroll borders and leaf knees are relief carved into the beech, the chessboard is inlaid, and the points and suns inside are scored into the wood. Nothing is printed.
