Two lions crouch face to face at the centre of the lid on this luxury backgammon table, carved in low relief inside a cartouche of leafy scrolls that runs out to the corners, with more scrollwork across the apron and down the knees of the cabriole legs. 60 × 60 cm / 23.6″ × 23.6″ open, 70 cm / 27.6″ high, handmade in Armenia.

There is no metal on this wooden backgammon table — it is carved beech through and through, with a moulded edge round the lid and a felt-lined compartment under the swinging top. Unfold it across the frame and the field is inlaid: pale points with arrowhead tips, a round inlaid ornament of interlaced leaves at the centre of each half, a scalloped rail at each end and a recess in each corner for the dice cup.

Play comes with wooden checkers in a pale set and a dark set, a dice cup and two dice. When the table has to move, the four cabriole legs unbolt from the frame.

Good to Know Before You Buy

Is the carving real? It is. The lions and scrolls are relief left standing when the beech round them was cut back, the apron and legs are carved the same way, and the points and ornaments inside are inlaid in pale wood. Swing the hinged top aside for the compartment or unfold it flat for the game.
