Luxury Backgammon Table with Facing Lions
Two lions face each other across the closed lid, carved in relief and set into scrollwork that runs out to the edges of the panel. They are not fighting and they are not tame — they hold the pose carvers have used for centuries when the point is symmetry and standing. Closed on its cabriole legs, this wooden backgammon table is a piece of furniture that happens to have a game inside it.
Open it flat and a full 23.6" / 60 cm playing field appears, laid in light and dark beech with a carved ornament centred in each half, 32 checkers and a dice cup waiting. This is the difference a handmade backgammon table makes: no box to find, no board to unroll. The lid comes up and the game is on, which is why it gets played on a Tuesday and not only at Christmas.
