Chess Set with Storage - Round Lattice
A circle, and a broad one — 23.6" / 60 cm across, with the walnut and maple playing field set into the middle and everything outside it given over to carving. Woven lattice runs the full circumference with a rope-twist moulding at the edge, and brass coordinate studs ring the board. Carving a curve gives the maker no straight runs to rest on, which is the honest reason round boards are rare.
The drawer is curved too, following the shape of the base, and it takes all 32 hand-carved pieces. That is what makes this a real chess set with drawers rather than a decorative disc: the whole set lives inside the object, so the board can stay out permanently without a bag or a box beside it. Seven kilos of solid beech and walnut, and it does not shift once it is placed.
