Armenian Walnut Chess Set with Mount Ararat and Carved Corners
This is the restrained one. Where other boards cover every inch, this walnut chess set keeps its carving to the four corners and gives the rest of the wood room to breathe — and then puts twin-peaked Mount Ararat, inlaid, right above the carry handle where your thumb goes when you pick it up. You end up touching the mountain every time you move the board. Somebody thought about that.
The playing field is inlaid maple and walnut across a full 15.7" / 40 cm, with 32 turned pieces to fill it. It folds in half, closes on itself with the pieces inside and lifts by the handle, which makes it a wooden chess set that goes to other people's houses instead of sitting on a shelf at yours. Handsome enough to leave out, plain enough that nobody is afraid to play on it.
