Above the cut-out carry handle of this travel chess set the peaks of Mount Ararat are carved in relief, and a scroll ornament sits in each of the four corners. The board is 40 × 40 cm / 15.7″ × 15.7″, handmade in Armenia from beech and stained a warm red-brown, with 32 wooden chess pieces and a carrying bag.

This is the wooden chess set for someone who likes a quiet board. Most of the frame is left smooth so the grain shows; the carving is kept to the corners, where a leafy scroll curls in line work, and to the arch above the handle, where the twin peaks stand in relief with rays cut around them. A single carved line follows the wavy edge all the way round.

Inside, both halves are lined with black velvet, so the pieces ride without a scratch. The 32 chess pieces are turned in light and dark wood. It folds shut on bronze clasps and lifts by the handle — the board you take to a friend's house rather than the one you keep on the shelf.
