The board sits on a castle. Battlement walls, corner turrets with bronze cannons standing on them, arched niches cut into the base with carved sentinels inside — all of it hand-worked in beech and walnut, with the playing field inlaid in walnut and maple across the top. Fifteen kilos. Before anyone thinks about the game, this is a piece of sculpture that happens to be fully playable.

Then the figural army goes out on it, 32 hand-carved pieces facing each other across a proper 23.6" / 60 cm field, and the whole thing makes sense: a medieval battle set on a medieval building. Two ornate drawers pull out of the fortress base on antique-finish brass handles and take the entire set, which is what makes this a genuine chess set with drawers rather than a display piece you have to find a box for.
