Brown Marble Chess Set with Bronze Pieces
Emperador is the marble people recognise without knowing its name — the deep brown one, shot through with pale veins that wander in every direction and never repeat. Cut into squares against cream and ringed with brass coordinate markers, it makes a board that looks less designed than discovered. Hold it up to a window and the veins run right through the stone rather than sitting on the surface, which is how you tell real marble from anything else.
Fifteen kilos across 15.7" / 40 cm, with 32 hand-cast bronze pieces — crowned kings, robed queens, horse-head knights, all modelled rather than turned. Playing on a stone chess set is a slightly different experience: the surface is cool, the pieces land with a click instead of a tap, and nobody plays fast on it. That is not a flaw. That is the point of the thing.

Stone Rather Than Wood
Each of the sixty-four squares is cut from natural stone and polished until it meets its neighbours dead flat. Nothing can be filled, sanded or glued back — a chip means the square is gone and another has to be cut. It is slow, expensive work, and it is why a chess set from stone survives generations of use without needing a single repair.
A Gift Worth Giving
Brown marble is the classicist's choice — warm, traditional, and immediately at home on a desk or in a study. Give it to someone who prefers things that look like they have always been there.
