This is the marble chess set for a study with dark wood and leather. The green is the stone's own colour, cut and polished so the white veins wander differently through every square; the onyx line glows orange where the light catches it; small brass diamonds sit along the frame with a brass mount at each corner. Cool to the hand, heavy, dead flat.

The pieces are cast in an openwork pattern — crowned kings, horse-head knights, pierced rooks — sixteen in a bright gold tone on cream marble bases and sixteen darker on green. They store in the wooden box between games, and the board stays where it is.
