Golden onyx glows where the lamp reaches it: the pale squares of this luxury stone chess set are translucent honey-coloured onyx beside brown Emperador marble, inside a pale marble border and a frame of the same brown stone with brass fleur-de-lis studs. 30 × 30 cm / 11.8″ × 11.8″ on four feet, handmade in Armenia, with 32 cast bronze pieces.

This is the chess set that changes with the light. The onyx squares are cloudy and crystalline, warming to amber when lit from behind, while the Emperador marble round them stays deep brown with its white veins; a strip of pale grey marble with amber corners separates field from frame, and the fleur-de-lis studs are set into the stone along all four sides.

The pieces are openwork castings in bronze — filigree bodies you can see through, crowned kings, maned knights and turreted rooks — sixteen in a gold tone and sixteen darkened, cool and dense in the hand. The board is a solid stone slab on four low feet, heavy enough to stay exactly where the game began, and ships in a wooden box.
