The dark squares read almost black from across the room and turn out to be deep red with pale veins when you sit down; the white squares are veined grey. Brass fleur-de-lis studs mark the coordinates round the frame, and the bronze pieces stand on small bases of the same two marbles, sixteen on white and sixteen on burgundy.
