Burgundy marble is dark enough to read as almost black from across a room and then, close up, turns out to be full of red. That is the trick of stone: it changes depending on how far away you are standing, which no wooden chess board has ever managed.

It is compact — 11.8" / 30 cm — and it still weighs nine kilos, which tells you it is solid marble rather than stone laid over something cheaper. The bronze pieces stand on their own small marble bases, sixteen light against sixteen dark, and they land on the board with a sound you will start playing for.
