Burgundy Marble Chess Set with Bronze Pieces
Deep burgundy against white, with a charcoal-grey border drawn round the whole field — three tones of real stone, none of them dyed or printed. Burgundy marble is dark enough to read as almost black from across a room and then, close up, turns out to be full of red. That is the trick of stone: it changes depending on how far away you are standing, which no wooden chess board has ever managed.
It is compact — 11.8" / 30 cm — and it still weighs nine kilos, which tells you it is solid marble rather than stone laid over something cheaper. The bronze pieces stand on their own small marble bases, sixteen light against sixteen dark, and they land on the board with a sound you will start playing for. A luxury chess set that fits on a desk and behaves like a much larger one.

Stone Rather Than Wood
Every square is cut from natural stone and ground to meet its neighbours flat, and there is no way to correct a mistake — a chipped edge means a new square, cut from scratch. It is slow, unforgiving work, and it is the reason a chess set from stone feels nothing like a wooden one under the hand.
A Gift Worth Giving
Small enough to give without needing to warn anyone first, serious enough that they will keep it on the desk rather than in a cupboard. Burgundy is the easiest of the marbles to place — it sits well with almost any wood.
