Honey-gold marble and white marble share the field of this luxury marble chess set, inside a frame of brown veined stone with brass studs along every side. 40 × 40 cm / 15.7″ × 15.7″ on low feet, 32 openwork bronze pieces on marble bases, a fitted wooden box; handmade in Armenia.

This is the marble chess set that glows under a lamp. The gold squares are shot through with amber and grey veins, the white ones with soft lilac, and the dark brown frame round them is Emperador-style stone with pale veining of its own; small brass diamonds march along the border and a brass mount sits at each corner. Cool, heavy and dead flat, it stays where it is put.

Each side has its own stone: the white army stands on white marble bases and the gold army on honey-gold ones, crowned kings and horse-head knights cast in openwork bronze. The wooden box takes the whole set in satin sleeves, with a window in the lid so you can see the board before it comes out.
