Coral and cream marble make up this luxury marble chess set — salmon-pink stone veined with rust for the dark squares and frame, cream for the light — at a full 50 × 50 cm / 19.6″ × 19.6″, the largest stone board we sell, with a gilt border, brass corner mounts and 32 openwork bronze pieces. Handmade in Armenia.

This is the chess set that does not go away between games, because at this size there is nowhere to put it. The coral marble changes with the light — pink where it falls, rust-veined where it does not — and the frame carries small brass ornaments along each side with a larger mount at every corner. The board sits on low feet, cool and dead flat.

The pieces are cast in an openwork pattern, sixteen in a pale gold tone and sixteen in a darker bronze, with crowned kings, horse-head knights and pierced rooks. On stone they land with a small definite click that wood never gives. A wooden box with a viewing window comes with the set.

Good to Know Before You Buy

Is the board one piece of marble? The 64 squares and the frame are separate pieces of natural marble, cut and polished flat and fitted together, so the coral veining runs differently in every square. The gilt border, the brass ornaments and the corner mounts are set into the stone. Nothing is printed or painted.

How do I look after it? Wipe with a soft, dry cloth. Keep acids — wine, citrus, cleaning sprays — off the marble, and lift the board with two hands rather than sliding it.
