A basket-weave panel is carved into the middle of each side of this chess set, with wheat ears and leaf scrolls at the corners and royal-blue epoxy poured into the dark squares. 40 × 40 cm / 15.7″ × 15.7″ open, handmade in Armenia from pale beech, with a carry handle cut through each end, 32 turned pieces and a bag.

This is the wooden chess set with two crafts on one top. The blue is resin, poured square by square and polished flush with the pale wood; the frame is old-fashioned relief — four woven ovals, one to a side, and at each corner a spray of wheat and acanthus leaf on a stippled ground. The coordinates sit in brass discs, the edge waves in scallops, and the 32 pieces are turned, pale on one side and dark on the other.

Both ends have a handle cut straight through the frame, and the board folds to a slim case on bronze hinges with a felt-lined well in each half for the pieces. It goes in the bag for travel and comes out looking like furniture.

Is the blue painted? No. Each dark square is a pour of blue epoxy resin, polished level with the beech so the surface is smooth under the pieces and the swirl differs square to square. The woven panels, the wheat and the leaves are carved into the wood in relief; the coordinates are brass discs. Nothing is printed.
