Luxury Armenian Chess and Backgammon Table with Coat of Arms
Bronze Armenian coats of arms are set into the corners and the drawer front — the eagle and the lion holding the shield, Ararat and the ark at its centre. Closed, this is a chess table: an inlaid board over a lattice-carved frame on cabriole legs. Lift the top and it becomes an Armenian backgammon table, bronze checkers and the dice cup already waiting inside.
There is a particular pleasure in a handmade chess and backgammon table carrying the coat of arms of the country whose wood it was cut and carved from. It is not a souvenir; it is furniture doing what furniture in Armenian houses has always done, holding the family's games and the family's symbols in the same object.
