Luxury Carved Scrollwork Chess and Backgammon Table — Handmade in Armenia

Leafy scrollwork fills the two panels either side of the chessboard on this luxury chess and backgammon table, carved in relief on a stippled ground and carried on across the apron and down the knees of the cabriole legs. The top unfolds into a backgammon field: 60 × 60 cm / 23.6″ × 23.6″ open, 70 cm / 27.6″ high, handmade in Armenia.

Closed, the wooden chess and backgammon table shows an inlaid board of pale and brown squares lettered and numbered round its edge, with a felt-lined compartment under the swinging top. Unfolded, the field carries pale inlaid points with arrowhead tips, a fluted sun-wheel ringed with scrolls in each half, a vine band on the rails and a recess at each corner for the dice cup.

The chess pieces are turned wood, sixteen pale and sixteen stained dark; the backgammon checkers are wooden too, with a dice cup and dice, and the legs unbolt for shipping.

How does the table open? The top is hinged: swing it aside for the felt-lined compartment or unfold it flat across the frame for backgammon. The scrolls are relief carved into the beech on the top, apron and legs, and the squares, points and sun-wheels are inlaid. Nothing is printed.
