This is the wooden chess set for a room that already has enough going on. The border is worked in a fine dotted texture with a small scroll cartouche at the front and back, the coordinates are cut pale into it beside the squares, and the whole board stands on four shaped legs that lift it clear of the table like a low bench.

One drawer opens at the front and one at the back, so each player keeps their own colour to hand — 16 light and 16 dark turned pieces, 32 in all. Set up takes a minute, clearing away takes less, and the board never needs to leave the table.
