Nothing on this classic folding chess set but pale unstained wood, a thin line round the field and the coordinates cut beside the squares — the plainest board we make. It is 40 × 40 cm / 15.7″ × 15.7″ open, handmade in Armenia from beech, with 32 wooden chess pieces and a carrying bag.

This is the wooden chess set for the person whose taste you cannot predict. The frame is left the natural colour of the wood and varnished, so it reads light and modern; the dark squares are a walnut brown, the light ones the same pale wood as the frame. It folds to 20 × 40 cm on bronze hinges with two clasps.

Inside, both halves are lined in black felt and the 32 turned pieces — light and dark — ride there when the board is closed. Full-size squares, a bag for the road, and no theme to outgrow: the board for a student, a club, or the office drawer.
