This is the wooden chess set that reads like lacquer from across the room. Each red square is its own pour, clouding between scarlet and brick and polished flush with the beech; the frame is narrow and straight, with brass discs for the coordinates and a scored line for a border. The pieces are turned in pale wood, both armies alike, told apart by their cast bronze tops — crowns, horse heads and towers, gold on one side and darkened on the other.

Turn it over and there is a second field cut in line work under the lid — lattice-filled points, a sun wheel in each half — waiting for checkers of your own; the chess pieces are what ship with it. Bronze hinges take the fold, one clasp holds it shut, and it stands slim on a shelf.

Is the carving real? Yes. The red is epoxy resin poured into each square and polished level with the pale beech, so it is part of the board, not a sheet laid on it; the coordinates are brass discs let into the wood. The tops on the pieces are cast bronze on turned wooden bodies. Nothing is printed.

Are backgammon checkers included? No. This set ships with the 32 chess pieces; the inside is cut as a backgammon field in line work, so a set of checkers and dice of your own turns it into a two-game board.
