Acanthus scrolls curl round every side of this travel chess set, cut deep on a stippled ground, and a carry handle is cut through each end of the frame. 40 × 40 cm / 15.7″ × 15.7″ open, handmade in Armenia from beech and stained walnut brown, with 32 turned pieces, a felt-lined inside and a carrying bag.

This is the wooden chess set with a frame that catches every light. The scrolls stand well off the surface and the ground between them is stippled, so the pattern reads in shadow from any angle; the field inside it is left plain — inlaid pale and dark squares with the coordinates carved beside them — because a game needs somewhere quiet to happen. The 32 pieces are turned, pale on one side and dark on the other.

Fold it and the two handles line up so the closed case lifts in one hand; open it the other way and both halves are lined in black felt for the pieces. Light enough for a bag, carved enough for a shelf.
