Tree of Life Folding Chess Table with Piece Storage

Tree of Life Folding Chess Table with Piece Storage — Handmade in Armenia

Handmade in Armenia from beech wood, this folding chess table opens to 23.6 × 23.6 in and stands 26.8 in high (60 × 60 × 68 cm). The closed lid shows a pale Tree of Life against dark lattice. Open it to reveal the chessboard and a carved recess for each of the 32 wooden pieces. Folded, the top is 11.8 × 23.6 in (30 × 60 cm).

This is the wooden chess table that keeps its own set. The border of the open board is cut into piece-shaped hollows — sixteen a side — so everything lies flush and the lid closes over it on brass hinges with a clasp. The tree sits in an arched cartouche with a bead-cut frame, and lattice covers the rest of the lid and the apron.

Four cabriole legs curve out to small pad feet. At 11.8 in (30 cm) deep when closed, the table can sit against a wall between games. The 14.1 × 14.1 in (36 × 36 cm) playing area fits the turned pieces in light and dark wood.

Good to Know Before You Buy

Is the tree pierced through the wood? No — it is worked in pale wood against the dark-stained lid inside a carved arched frame, with the lattice ground cut around it. The recesses inside the board and the lattice on the apron are carved into the same beech. Nothing is painted.

How do I look after it? Keep it out of direct sunlight and away from radiators. Dust with a soft brush, wipe the field with a dry cloth, and close the lid with the pieces in their recesses.
