Fold the lid of this luxury chess table shut and it is a Tree of Life in pale wood on dark lattice; open it and a chessboard appears with a carved recess for each of the 32 wooden pieces. Open, 60 × 60 × 68 cm / 23.6″ × 23.6″ × 26.8″; folded 30 × 60 cm; handmade in Armenia.

This is the wooden chess table that keeps its own set. The border of the open board is cut into piece-shaped hollows — sixteen a side — so everything lies flush and the lid closes over it on brass hinges with a clasp. The tree sits in an arched cartouche with a bead-cut frame, and lattice covers the rest of the lid and the apron.

Four cabriole legs curve out to small pad feet, and at 30 cm deep the closed table sits against a wall like a console until someone wants a game. The playing area is 36 × 36 cm, sized for the turned pieces in light and dark wood.
