The 32 pieces on this luxury chess table have faces: kings and queens with carved features and crowns, helmeted bishops, horse-head knights, in light and dark wood. They stand on a 60 cm inlaid board framed in acanthus corners and scroll cartouches, on a table 70 cm / 27.6″ high with an apron drawer, handmade in Armenia from beech.

This is the wooden chess table for someone who plays with characters, not shapes. The border carries a spray of acanthus in each corner over a dotted ground and a scroll cartouche at the centre of every side; the coordinates rest on small brass roundels; the apron is carved in a diamond lattice with a brass pendant pull on the drawer, and the four legs are grooved and taper to the floor.

Each side of the army is carved rather than turned — a bearded king, a crowned queen, a bishop in a pointed helmet — so the two colours face each other like two courts. Between games they go in the drawer, and at 70 cm the table sits with two ordinary chairs.
