This is the wooden chess table that reads as furniture first. Each side of the top is carved with a pair of acanthus scrolls meeting at the centre, a lattice panel in every corner and a moulded edge; the field is inlaid dark and pale squares ringed by brass coordinate discs, and the stippled apron holds a lattice-fronted drawer that slides out on runners beneath the board.

The column is turned in rings and swells on a stepped square plinth with bracket feet, so the table takes little floor and stands square. The pieces are cast in an openwork pattern with a gold tone — crowned kings, maned knights, pierced bishops and rooks — each on a turned wooden base, pale for one side and red-brown for the other.
