Handmade in Armenia from beech wood, this ten-sided chess table is 23.6 in across and 27.6 in high (60 × 70 cm). An inlaid board sits on an acanthus-carved pedestal with three scrolled feet. An apron drawer stores the included 32 gold-toned bronze chess pieces on wooden bases.
This is the wooden chess table that works as sculpture between games. The ten-sided top carries lattice and leaf carving in the segments round the square field, with the coordinates on brass roundels; the deep apron is textured all the way round and holds a drawer on a brass pendant pull. Below, the column is carved in acanthus and stands on three pierced, scrolled legs.
The pieces are cast in an openwork pattern with a gold tone — crowned kings and queens, horse-head knights, pierced bishops and rooks — each fixed to a turned wooden base, pale for one side and red-brown for the other. They store in the drawer, so the table stays set and stays the centre of the room.
