This is the wooden chess set for a small table: 30 cm across, yet nothing about it is small. Each amber square is a separate pour, so the resin swirls differently in every one, and the pale wood between them carries its grain straight through the field. The numbers and letters sit in round brass discs let into the border, and the four feet are cast in relief.

The army is the point. Every piece is a cast figure rather than a turned shape — archers for the pawns, mounted riders for the knights, fluted columns for the rooks, robed kings and queens — in a dark bronze finish, standing on turned wooden bases, pale for one side and dark for the other.
